Sustainable Food
The Scenario
As the survivors of the zombie apocalypse, you are tasked with finding a sustainable source of food for your community. You are faced with the challenge of sustaining and maintaining a viable source of food production throughout the Kamloops winter, ensuring that your community of survivors have access to food.
You will need to learn what types of food will provide enough nutrients to sustain a person. You must discover a method of producing that food in a sustainable manner so that enough is available for the community. You must be able to design and construct a functional system to produce the foods needed given the challenges of few resources, little or no electrical input required, and the upcoming winter.
You must discover what it will take to feed the community and ensure that it will survive. You are tasked with researching the best method of producing food under these conditions and present your findings to the community. During a presentation of learning we will present our ideas to the community inside and outside of school so that we can decide on the best method available to us so that we can being construction as soon as possible.

Driving Question
How can we create a sustainable food source for our community of survivors?
Why do we need food?
Food is essential to our survival. Food provides us with nutrients. We use those nutrients for:

Background Tasks
Start a new page in your notebook or get a fresh sheet of looseleaf paper. Add a title and date.
Alternatively you can use a Google Doc to record all your work. If you choose this option, be sure to share it with me [email protected]
Your tasks is to complete the following:
Part 1
1. Look at the Canada Food Guide and examine the recommended number of food guide servings. Now examine what one serving actually is.

Part 2
1. Watch the videos below under Video Resources.
2. Make notes from the video as you watch, just like was demonstrated in class. You can pause and rewind as many times as you require. Some videos have captions, so please use those if needed.
3. Write a 1 paragraph summary from each video. A guide to basic paragraph writing is here. Remember that a good paragraph has a topic sentence, three body sentences that relate to your topic sentence, and a concluding sentence that summarizes your evidence that relates back to your topic sentence.

Part 3 - Greenhouses
In this section, you will explore some different structures needed to grow food in a sustainable way. In small groups, you will examine some examples of greenhouses and complete the chart provided. Each group will then explain the pros and cons of the greenhouse based on their research.
These videos are just an introduction. You don't have to watch it all but they will help you give an idea of what the are and how they are constructed. When researching your greenhouse, be sure that you have the scenario in mind for what the requirements are.

Blueprint Design
As a class we have decided to construct a cold frame greenhouse. The students have drawn blueprints and calculated the dimensions of their design including surface area, linear feet of 1x4's as well as used Pythagorean theorem to determine the length of their lids.
Construction Begins!
A HUGE thank you to Cory, Dustin and Liam from ASK Wellness and their generous donation of recycled lumber! ASK Wellness, Cory, Liam and Dustin dropped off a truckload of recycled boxsprings for the students to break down and use their construction project. This lumber would have been destined for the landfill if we did not "upcycle" them.
